Kasane Eri (over-collar)
Kasane Eri(over-collar) also “Kasaneeri” is a type of collar worn with kimono or traditional Japanese clothing, where one collar is layered over another for decorative purposes. It is used to enhance the elegance of the kimono collar or to add a touch of sophistication to the attire, depending on the occasion.
Kasane Eri(over-collar)involves layering two collars, although sometimes three or more layers may be used. The choice of collars to layer together depends on factors such as thickness, color, and pattern, which are selected to harmonize with the kimono, obi (sash), and other accessories.
There are several variations of Kasane Eri(over-collar),as follows
1. “Kumiori” (Layered Collar): Combining collars of different colors or patterns to create a striking effect.
2. “Awa-se-eri” (Matching Collar): Layering collars made of the same fabric or pattern for a refined and understated look.
3. “Erimaki” (Collar Wrap): Wrapping and layering the kimono collar for a stylereminiscent of Western fashion.
Difference between a “kasane eri”(layered collar) and a “han eri” (half-collar).
What is a half-collar? A half-collar is a single piece of fabric measuring approximately 1 to 1.1 meters in length and about 15 centimeters in width, which helps prevent collar stains from makeup, sweat, food, and other substances on kimono. The half-collar, surrounding the face, is selected to complement the balance between the kimono and the facial complexion.
